I left a composition career about 25 years ago at the University of Miami, mostly because I was way too unsure of myself but I was also confused about my musical loyalties (I was studying classical and contemporary composition and performing classical double bass while I was attracted to Jaco, Weather Report and Metheny). I made the right decision in abandoning it because my heart wasn’t in what I was doing. I ended up immersed in jazz in the long run, mostly the bass, but now guitar. I still have the composition itch but I’ll wait until I feel I really have to scratch it, I think.
