Ben Allison – Cowboy Justice

October 23rd, 2006

I have a few Ben Allison albums that I like, so when I saw Cowboy Justice on eMusic, it was a no-brainer to click the download button.

I’ve given this a couple of listens, and I am really digging it. The compositions are good, and the grooves feel great, but the one thing that has really grabbed me on this album is the playing of trumpeter Ron Horton. I have heard his name before, but to my knowledge I hadn’t heard him play. I’m glad I am getting to hear him on this album. He sounds great.

Ron Horton was featured in the “Playlist” section of the NYTimes Sunday October 15 among other news items of note. He has played with Bill Frisell’s various groups on Nonesuch (including The Intercontinentals) and Jenny Scheinman’s band on her latest CD 12 Songs on Cryptogramophone. He also has a recent of his own on Fresh Sound New Talent which is exceelent.

    Correction:

Matt (above) is thinking of Ron Miles. Ron Horton, who plays trumpet on my album has also played with a wide variety of folks. More on him at http://www.ronhorton.net

Sorry, I somehow missed Ben’s comment in the moderation queue, so it just got added.

I guess that also goes to show that you never know who might read what you write. Thanks for stopping by Ben.
